Pat Lemke - Lake Washington Singers - 1967 - Present

When I joined the group in 1967, it was an auditioned group. You had to sing "America" without accompaniment before the director and the accompanist. It doesn't sound like much now, but you felt very 'tested" at the time, and some people were afraid to do that. It was necessary be able to read music and have access to an instrument to practice with. Eventually, with the advent of more singing groups on the east side, the board voted to skip the audition and rely on the "ear" of director to find any sour notes.

I am still glad the Singers went on tour and sang in such wonderful places in Europe. Also, I think we do a great thing with the scholarships. Most all voice instructors in the area know of us through these.

It was quite an honor to be a part of Lake Washington Singers. I had friends who sang barbershop and thought LWS was too hard for them. They would say, "Oh, you sing with the 'good singers' ".
